Name: Ratchet
Race: Bot
Gender: Mech
Age: Way before the war, late 60s I’d say if he were human.
Origin: Cybertron
Allegiance: Autobot
Description: To the untrained eye Ratchet’s gruff personality would put you off. It’s not secret that the aging robot has no people skills and is very easily annoyed. His fuse is a short one covered in oil, one could say. Working with bots eons younger than him doesn’t help that fuse either. You’d think it would give him some tolerance, wouldn’t you? Well it would seem that it didn’t.
But like a clichéd bad guy, the gruff front he puts on is just that. It’s just a front. War changes people, he’ll tell you. It forces them to become something they’re not in the frail attempt at preserving what they really are. Before the war Ratchet was a bot who was always ready to help. He took his role as a med bot extremely seriously (he still does).
Ratchet had a strong sense of honor and justice back then. Now it’s been covered by a bitterness formed from old age and old scars. Sometimes he’ll feel like there’s just no point trying to fight for ‘what’s right’. Stationed with bots not trained to kick Decepticon aft always left Ratchet feeling like the odds were stacked so far against them there was no point in continuing their resistance.
Perhaps it was the odd leadership of Optimus Prime that made the old bot realized that things, even strange things, were worth fighting for. He’ll admit, trusting and obeying the younger mech seemed like an impossible task to Ratchet the beginning and for most of their time together. It wasn’t until they stationed in Detroit that Ratchet realized Optimus was not only a worthy leader, but he was a worthy hero.
Getting along with others is not a strong point for this mech. Even if the war is over (to a point), Ratchet never managed to purge the gruffer side he held. He’ll hardly ever warm up to a new being regardless of race or orientation. Holding a conversation merely for conversations sake is something Ratchet would never do. Spending time among organics seems to have had an affect on the old bot, however. He’s much more open (which leads one to wonder how ‘closed’ he was before…) to others and glimpses of his old, compassionate side manage to slip through cracks in his war-shield everyday.
And yes, believe it or not, Ratchet has a compassionate side. He became a medical officer for a reason, yes? He definitely wasn’t a coward trying to avoid war (his time on the frontlines proved that) and he’s far from squeamish. He just has the strongest urge, no– need—to help others. Watching another living organism suffer could be considered the highest torture to the old mech.
Like any other aging bot, Ratchet has mixed feelings toward young bots. His instincts tell him that they need to be carefully raised and praised so they come out right. Kindness is what they need in their younger years. That and understanding, plus the compassion that he has hidden under his plating. But his… personal experience with some younger bots gives him an aversion to them. Perhaps the typical nature of one of age managed to add to his dislike of the younger living creatures.
In all, Ratchet likes being sarcastic and mumbling about the old days and how younglings need to learn their place while suffering from multiple flashbacks of the war.

Fitting to his role as the team’s medic, Ratchet takes the form of a retro-looking ambulance. His armor plating is painted a typical red and white with black portions here and there. Ratchet is not the largest bot. He can safely be put on the smaller size of mechs, thought that could be attributed simply to his age. Another thing attributed to his age is the humorous “belly” he sports in robot mode. No one said Ratchet was the fittest robot, now did they?
Past: Years ago Ratchet was sent out to retrieve an intelligence officer by the name of Arcee. Shortly after finding her the pair was captured by a bounty hunter named Lockdown. Before Lockdown could swipe Ratchet’s EMP device Arcee convinced him to wipe codes from her mind so no one could get them. The device accidently produced a stronger blast which erased the bot’s entire memory.
Sometime later Ratchet was asked to perform surgery on the femme to retrieve the codes. During the surgery Arcee uploaded the codes to Ratchet who was taken away to another room which contained the Autobot’s “last chance” against the Decepticons, Project Omega (Omega Supreme). Arcee was originally the one who would imprint on Omega Supreme but Ratchet, who now held the codes, took her position.
When he realized that Omega Supreme was made simply as a weapon of mass destruction with a simple processor so he could not show remorse, it was easy to say Ratchet was furious. The mech refused to teach him the way he was asked to and instead attempted to teach Omega how to be an Autobot. Omega Supreme was damaged beyond repair after what seemed to be the final battle of the war. Ratchet succeeded in putting him into a modified stasis until he could repair the bot once more.
Ratchet, no longer wanting to deal with battle, managed to get assigned to the quieter life of a spacebridge repair bot. He was placed under the command of Optimus Prime and was joined by Bumblebee and Bulkhead, later Prowl.
On a routine repair mission the crew stumbled upon the fabled AllSpark. Recognizing it, Ratchet immediately wanted it thrown back into the spacebridge from which it came. However, the arrival of Megatron and several other Decepticons caused the crew to spur into action which led to a battle and then the crashing of their ship on Earth where they remained for 50 years.
After they awoke from their stasis the crew settled on Earth, protecting the humans from Decepticon forces who came for the AllSpark they hid. He’s remained with his crew as the Earth Team ever since, guarding the humans as acting medic of the team.

Other: Ratchet’s main weapons are two electromagnet pincers that extend from his forearms. With them he can move metal-based objects which allows him to levitate himself and others as well as tear objects apart or create shields. His other weapon (which he stole back from Lockdown after having an unexpected meet up with the bounty hunter) is an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) device. It’s uses are mostly medical in Ratchet’s hands, though he has been known to knock out a bot or two with them.
I am a Decepticon. (Yeah right)
